Wellness is above all, I suppose, being true to your own highest and best nature.  If you live as your highest self, how can you be living in any state but wellness?

Some days this is easy.  Life has a flow to it, and everything you do seems to work out.  Just yesterday, as I walked with friends after brunch, I made a comment that I was ready to receive something that I had been battling with internally for some time.  I felt a shift in my willingness to be fully present and authentic  in my life in that moment.  Not ten minutes later, what I had asked for was offered up to me on a silver platter.

Other days, living well is a real challenge.  Those are the days that a moment or two taken out for reflection, meditation, perhaps a spot of journaling, can be particularly enlightening and freeing.  The “gremlins” that get inside our inner tape recorders thrive when we listen to them, but they wither when they are confronted with self examination.

Whether you are doing well today or struggling, take a moment out to express gratitude for the experience of life, and ask yourself:   Who are you here to be?  What is your passion, your purpose, your seat of wellness?

Living Well is a Choice

Life is full of Stuff that happens.  There’s just no escaping it.  It’s rather like Niagara Falls.  Stuff comes barreling into our lives every moment of every day.  A lot of it is wonderfully good stuff, and sometimes there’s some really terrible, no good, horrible, really rotten stuff.  But we do each get to choose what to do about it.  How we react to the stuff that happens is entirely up to us.

That’s the essential point.  Living Well isn’t about controlling what happens, and it has nothing to do with escaping life’s inevitable struggles and tragedies.  Living Well is about understanding how to create the life we want and deserve out of the hand we are dealt……

In short, living well boils down to conducting your life in the fullness of gratitude, enthusiasm, and positive intention.

Living Well does not correlate with having great finances.  Living Well stems from recognizing and appreciating the basic spiritual truth that life’s most profound meaning comes from intangibles: breath, love, and health.

I’m hearing the same question from my Baby Boomer clients more frequently now:  How can I still LIVE WELL when life is getting so insecure?  I guess that folks mean when fianances get unsteady, because I don’t see that life is any more or less secure than it ever was.    So let me throw out an entirely different question to all of you: What motivates you to get up to life every day?  Is it your finances?  Is it your family?  Is it an appreciation of the simple fact that you CAN get up and enjoy something in your life?

Let me share something with you, please.  Money comes and goes.  Material goods come and go.  What truly matters in life are the intangibles that thrill us in good times, sustain us through the lean times, and allow us truly to live well regardless of what is happening in the economy, politics, or the weather.

If you have friends and family who love you, enough good health to be able to draw breath (even if you need assistance),  good enough hearing to listen to the birds sing, good enough eyesight to see a child smile, food to eat and perhaps to share, a roof over your head, and a clean bed under the roof, you ARE living well.  The rest is gravy.

Of course we all like gravy.  Don’t give up on gravy.  Just don’t confuse the gravy with what really constitutes living well.

It’s been a while…

I thought it was time to add a general LIFE COACHING blog to my repertoire, so here it is!  I also have a regular life coaching website with tons of information on it.  And I have two other blogs… http://www.ElderCareCoach@wordpress.com and http://www.WritersCoach@wordpress.com.

When I transitioned from being a psychotherapist and career counselor to being a Life Coach about eight years ago, people would look at me quizically.  All they seemed to hear me say was “Coach”, and although I am fit, I’m not exactly a paragon of athleticism.  They would invariably and rather skeptically ask me what sport I coached.  When I answered, “Life!”, they looked even more confused.

There are many, many ways to approach life.  Life can be a sport with personal and team challenges and competitions.  It is definitely a learning experience, somewhat like going to school for years and years and, if you are very fortunate, even more years.  But to me, life is almost most fundamentally a journey with many, many exciting paths to explore.

In this space, as in my Life Coaching practice, I will be taking you along on the journey!
